Life Support returns to one of my favorite themes: guardianship and protection. This winged figure is a guardian in nature, a storyteller for us as viewers, and a vessel carrying an illustrated figure that represents a human. The guardian occupies space both in its own realm and in the realm of its charge. It’s unclear whether the sheltered figure knows it’s being protected.
Illustrated across the guardian’s body are elements of land, sea, and sky. Birds, fish, and plant life symbolize our planet Earth and suggest that there are forces beyond our understanding supporting, protecting, and surrounding us.
