Upwards and Onwards

Upwards and Onwards is the most triumphant piece in the Wish You Were Here series. While the other works explore grief and longing in the face of death, this sculpture celebrates the excitement of the unknown path still to come. The multi-winged figure leans forward with a sense of expectation and activation. On its front, a human form is depicted as a star descends to meet a matching star-shaped opening—suggesting arrival, reunion, or wholeness.

Two large portal illustrations on either side show scenes of celestial beings and dwellings, evoking both journey and protection. Across the top of the figure’s head, a shooting star streams from one portal to the next—its path interrupted by the beak of a three-eyed, crane-like bird. This recurring figure in my work represents an all-seeing, ultimate protector. With its impossibly long legs, the bird plucks a star from a pile on the figure’s back, mirroring the star being received on the front. It acts as a bringer of missing pieces—completing the puzzle. Other small figures float in space nearby, each traveling their own similar path.
