DON’T PANIC: EMERGING ARTIST CAROLYN SAYLOR’S EVOCATIVE SCULPTURES OFFER PROTECTION AND HOPE
This is Not the End, a series of eight original pieces, is now available for viewing and purchase at www.carolynsaylorart.com
Emerging Orange County Artist Carolyn Saylor presents her most recent sculptural series, This is Not the End. These sculptures, characterized by their subtle, evocative facial expressions and an innovative visual vocabulary of carved illustrations, connect us to deeper spiritual truths.
Conceived and created from 2021-2024, in the aftermath of the global Covid pandemic, these works explore the presence of forces beyond our senses. They speak to the anxiety and uncertainty felt when faced with an apocalyptic event. In Sentinels, we see her creatures standing watch over a small town, their long legs shielding buildings from harm. The Rescue is all movement and light, and points to a greater hand at work in our lives.
“When I created my sculptures I envisioned them at a colossal scale, as big as mountains, guarding whatever might be nearby or underneath them.” says Saylor. “I imagined these celestial beings standing watch over my home as I slept, or walking with impossibly long legs over my car as I drove.”
Distilled, Carolyn Saylor’s work is an exploration of her faith. “I hope these pieces prompt viewers to consider what happens after death and whether there are entities beyond our world. I believe these questions are at the heart of humanity, and I hope my work knocks on that inner door.”
This Too Shall Pass, an original sculpture from the series, is on view at the Irvine Fine Art Center until September 28, 2024 as part of the 40th annual All Media exhibition.
